WHAT WE THINK
In a First Drive review of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 63, we liked the smooth nine-speed transmission and called it “lightning quick.” The acceleration was “neck-snapping” and we loved listening to the exhaust note with the top down in the cabriolet model. The new AMG Drive Unit adds a round controller on the steering wheel that changes the drive modes and adjusts the amount of traction.
Handling dynamics were impressive: “Some off-camber points on the track revealed how well the car corners at speed even when one wheel was lifted.” The suspension soaked up road imperfections well, but sometimes it was harsh in Sport and Sport+ modes. Steering is very responsive and quick. Inside, luxury is abundant with carbon fiber trim, Nappa leather, an optional panoramic sunroof, and a 64-color ambient lighting system. There are also many standard and optional driver-assist features. We concluded by saying, the C 63 S will not disappoint.
In a First Drive review of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz C 300, we liked the many new driver-assist features and the revised “knockout” of an interior with a new, optional 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The updated engine “is a happy little mill, delivering a healthy dose of grunt throughout the rev range with only small pockets of turbo lag on occasion.” Handling isn’t the C 300’s forte: “Throw it into a corner, and the C300 quickly reminds you that it’s tuned for comfort, not agility, even with the suspension set to its Sport setting.” Although the C300 looks just about the same as it did before the 2019 model year, we said, “the tech has taken a big leap forward.
