Swedish Volvo tops list of safest cars .. German fail safety test

3 out of 11 cars fell in a US crash test

Volvo «at 40» .. The safest car according to European tests
London - Washington: «Middle East»
Two tests, one by the US Institute of Highway Safety Insurance and the other by the European Institute for the Test of Vehicle Resistance to Clashes, show that Volvo continues to rank first on the list of the safest cars on the road.
But the irony of the American tests was that German luxury cars had a negative rating despite their popularity.

The test conducted by the Highway Safety Insurance Institute in the United States was designed to simulate typical incidents such as a car collision with a tree. The test, however, was striking for more than one reason: instead of colliding 50 per cent of the front bumper of the vehicle with the steel body on the test, the vehicle used in it hit less than 50 per cent of the surface.

The reduced impact zone makes it difficult for the chassis to absorb energy from the crash. This energy is concentrated on a smaller area and produces catastrophic results.

Volvo won the US and European safety test to confirm that it remains the company that has established its reputation on an excellent safety record for decades. Which was suspended by the Swedish company by pointing out that the test showed «the effectiveness of our safety system».

Volvo confirms that its cars have achieved good results due to special side reinforcement in the chassis. The different models of the Swedish brand - now owned by China's Jili - are taking part in the extraordinary tests since the mid-1980s.

However, German experts have responded to these good results to the Swedish company's use of specialized knowledge closely related to the topographical nature of its country. Car accidents caused by tree collisions are common in Sweden's vast wooded areas, unlike in Germany where metal barriers are usually placed on the sides Roads to protect trees.

Volvo's safety position in the European test, which took place a few days after the American test, was the first in the European crash test, the Volvo 40, being the world's first dedicated air cushion for pedestrian protection. As a Volvo, which has always been renowned for its emphasis on safety requirements, the F40 offers pioneering safety features, including pedestrian protection technology, which Volvo pioneered and automatically works with the brake system when sensing a potential collision with a road traveler.

The car offers the world's first airbag mounted at the bottom of its glass facade to protect pedestrians in the event of shock, as well as an auxiliary system to prevent unintentional exit of the road, and an automated system to easily park the car in parallel narrow positions.

In its new application, City Safety has received new developments and is designed to avoid collision potential at speeds of up to 50 km / h.

The surprise of the American tests was the negative results achieved by the German luxury cars, with 3 of the 11 vehicles included in the Road Safety Institute's test got a good or acceptable rating, most notably after the Volvo S60, in contrast to the Swedish company , German cars did not pass the tests, which is a flaw in their impressive performance in such tests.

Mercedes-Benz and Audi's A-4 were rated worst by the Mercedes-Benz C class, while the new BMW 3 and Volkswagen's CC, Evaluation of "without acceptable". German companies felt somewhat comfortable, with competitors such as the luxury Lexus or Toyota's Lincoln of a "bad" rating.

Experts at Mercedes-Benz have expressed doubts about whether the new American car test is realistic enough.

"The chances of receiving a car for a sudden shock or a collision from an inverted vehicle are much higher than a collision with a concrete block," said Dir Euchel, head of the Accident Research Unit. The company said it had nevertheless taken the test results seriously and would act accordingly.

Audi's reaction was similar. "We are not trying to play down this test," a company spokesman said, noting that the type of crash caused by the test was rare. In Germany, such incidents account for about 4 per cent of accidents resulting in serious deaths or injuries in the country. Audi will evaluate the results to draw lessons from them.

Car manufacturers have little choice, as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety will incorporate these results into a classification system, and this will directly affect the safety ratings of vehicles in the future.

No producer can ignore this, because crash test results directly affect car sales.
